Exterior Painting Consultation:

Scheduling made easy. You can contact us by filling out a contact form or calling us. We will get you on the schedule same day. Upon arrival, you will meet with the estimator to walk the house. During the walkthrough, you both can discuss all findings and exterior painting job details, ensuring you get all work quoted that’s required to get things done right the first time. If approved, we will get you on the schedule and into our system, Buildertrend. An invitation will be sent to get you into your customer portal where all communication will take place.

Preparation & Painting:

Most contractors can make your house look good for the first year, but long-lasting results are hard to obtain if any preparation steps are missed. Using the right exterior painting materials is just as important as the technique used to apply it, so make sure the contractors you have bid your home explain all materials they use and the warranty they offer, as cheap caulk will crack after 1 year, which allows water behind wood, causing wood rot to happen.

Here are the following steps we take when preparing your home for exterior painting:

Washing

We always start off by pressure washing the house. This will remove dirt, debris, webs and any other foreign object that shouldn’t be there. Do not mistake washing for scraping. Many contractors remove loose paint by applying really high pressure to your wood to remove it. Yes, this saves time. No, you should not do this. When you pressure wash that hard it will cause gouging and scratching in the wood, giving it a rough appearance. It also allows water to penetrate deep in the wood. This will cause bubbling, peeling and rot over a period of time. We make sure all surfaces are clean for painting, but we do not ever apply enough pressure to damage your exterior woodwork.

Scraping & Priming

We scrape all loose paint from your home. We will scrape all loose paint, caulk, silicone and glaze needy windows, so the new product has a good surface to adhere to. All scraped wood is primed with only the best bonding primers. We make sure the new paint has a good, primed surface. It also helps level out the old paint and new, so you do not see the un-level appearance. Yes, this material cost more, but it makes the difference from repainting every 4-6 years and repainting every 10-14 years.

Wood Rot

All materials that show signs of rot and decay will be replaced. This includes trim boards, siding, fascia and soffit. We make sure all materials are solid, before applying paint. We only use smart products, so you can make sure wood rot is something you never have to worry about again. All products are secured with hot dipped galvanized nails, so they can never pull loose, as the dipping is glue. If something has minimal wood rot, we also can apply bondo to correct it, but that is only done with your approval and is something we can discuss during the initial walk through.

Caulking & Glazing

Slopping on cheap caulk will only give you short term results. Without the correct products and application you will fall short of long-term results. We only use products that carry a “lifetime warranty”. Powerhouse by Sherwin Williams is some of the best caulk available. It is crack resistant, mildew resistant and will never change color. When applied properly, this stuff lasts years. Only certain areas should be caulked and you should never over or under apply caulk. To much caulk will cause an ugly appearance, while not enough will allow water through the joints. Only trained painters work for us, so you can anticipate perfect caulking throughout the property. We always caulk in white so you can see just how caulked your home really is!

Covering Surfaces

We make sure all surfaces not being painted are covered before we paint. We trim back any bushes, trees and flowers touching the home so everything is painted evenly. All unpainted surfaces are covered, so we prevent any accidents before they happen. We make sure your home only gets paint where you want it.

Exterior Painting Your Home

We apply paint with adhesion in mind. We use a sprayer to apply the paint and a roller to push it into the house. This technique is called back rolling. Back rolling allows the paint to adhere well to the surface, preventing future peeling and bubbling. It also creates an even appearance. Most painters only spray the paint on and this will lead to future problems. Always ask a painter how they apply paint, if they do not say back rolling, then you should move on to another company. Trim is painted by brush. All trim is hand painted and typically you only paint the front of your home with trim paint, unless you are a corner lot.

Review

Once complete we review the completed project with you. We check over the entire house for any problems. If any issues are found we make a punch list and correct within the next 48 hours. Typically this is not an issue, but houses are large and a thing or two could get missed by the painters, so we double check to make sure its perfect!
